Family - Cichlidae

Scientific Name - Geophagus altifrons

Distribution/Location - Wide spread throughout the Amazon River Basin; localities include Manuas (pictured), Rio Xingu & Rio Tocantins.

Water Parameters - pH 6.5-7.5

Temperature - 76-84 F

Size - Males: 12" Females: 8-10"

Breeding - Ovophilous mouthbrooder (Both parents mouthbrood fry after fry hatch)

Personal Remarks - Easy to keep, be sure to provide a tank size of at least 75 gallons & regular water changes. Well worth having to wait two years for these fish to mature. Hands down my favorite fish of all time, it has it all coloration and behavior. Both males and females care for their offspring when breeding.

Additional Remarks - Sometimes imported as Geophagus "surinamensis".
