Distribution/Location - Rio Xingu, Brazil with similar species or subspecies wide spread throughout the Amazon River Basin; other locations include Rio Tapajos & Rio Trombetas among others.

Breeding - The only known Geophagus species that is an open brooder. May be one of the oldest Geophagus species.
Personal Remarks - More sensitive to water parameters then other Geophagus species. Care must be taken to give them regular water changes and softer water. Care is straightforward otherwise and G. argyrostictus will take all foods.
Additional Remarks - Was imported as Geophagus proximus in 2005.
