Book References - Atlas of Killifishes of the Old World by Jorgen J. Scheel

Anyone who has kept killifish in the past has probably heard mention of this book. Atlas of Killifishes of the Old World by Jorgen J. Scheel is probably the best book on killifish coming from Africa. This book, written in 1990 is still the most comprehensive guide to African killies.

Within the 448 pages, every known species of killie is shown through multiple photos, exact locations & for some species, chromosomal data to help explain speciation & close relationships within the group of the egglaying toothcarps. Scheel also manages to show images of killifish spawning & displaying such as that of Nothobranchius rachovi on page 319. The number of photos in the book (over 600 according to the cover of the book), makes it easier for identification of African killfish.

Probably the largest obstacle is obtaining a copy of this book as it has been out of print for a number of years & the cost of a copy can be over a hundred dollars. If you have the chance to get this book, it is well worth every penny. The information within its pages are a wealth of knowledge that any other killifish book has yet to match.
